RE: Crates 001

Open Crates started as a local Jersey City meetup for diggers to share music.

At any session you’d find an OG putting a newbie onto a heavy 60’s jazz groove, two producers swapping clean prog-rock drums, or your average dude sharing a track from a new artist that no one in the group had ever heard.

Re:Crates - the first Open Crates 7” series - continues the vibe of our dig sessions by reinterpreting familiar and obscure records found in the crates of diggers worldwide. This series is for the neurotic collector that needs every version of Herbie Hancock’s Watermelon Man, to the dedicated Bandcamper who cops a new indie record every week.

Each release is inspired by a personal encounter shared amongst the Open Crates crew. It’s our way of sharing a small piece of our vibe with the world … through the beats.

about

November 10, 2014:

Steve of Open Crates troops from Chilltown to The Planet to see JR & PVD get busy at The Brooklyn Museum First Saturdays for the release of their Modern Vintage album.

In BK fashion, the museum was deep in rhythm with JR on the mic, PVD leading the band, Melinda Camille crooning melodies and a cast of special guests around the stage.

Halfway through the set, Shabaam Sahdeeq (Rawkus, Soundbombing, you should know) and El da Sensei (Artifacts, tags all over Jersey, you should know again) , dipped in twin Polo Rugbys, grab the mic to perform the album cut Vinyl Is Forever.

And as expected, three lyrical Gods can’t get off without a freestyle session … one that brings Homeboy Sandman out of the audience to flip verses over the band workin' out Bob James’ classic "Nautilus".

When the cipher ended, Steve immediately texted Pat to cut a side of Nautilus and flip Love You Inside Out (just cuz he loves that record) with Melinda Camille. Re:Crates was born.

We’re proud to transition into 2017 with the first bangers in a long line of records to come from the Open Crates Crew.

PVD is a drummer, composer, producer, & band leader. Equally comfortable behind the drums as he is writing songs at the Fender Rhodes, PVD balances the rhythmic intensity of true-school hip hop with the rich harmony & refreshing subtlety of jazz. Live instrumentation & analog synths, alongside vintage keys & lush horns, all combine to straddle the boundaries of electronic music, jazz, & hip-hop. ... more
